"If I do not choose for myself, someone else will choose for me. I then become an instrument for the accomplishment of their goals and intentions - and mine are lost." Louise LeBrun This issue released: Wednesday, November 6, 2002 Spotlight On - people, products and pronouncements Spotlight On — Feeding the Hunger ~ food for the inquisitive mindYou're a Master Practitioner, Trainer or Master Trainer of NLP. Your desire to continue to grow is always present. Your commitment to your own evolution takes you to other parts of the world and into new models of thinking that challenge your existing world view. Your results attest to your skill level and invite you to ponder what's next; what else; and how else can I engage the world? Feeding the Hunger is a 7-day intensive designed to press your edges on multiple levels. Building on your existing skill level, we move away from technique and into the context within which the technique is applied. Fully trusting your ability with NLP, what is challenged is the structure of your "Being" and how it affects the way you interact with others in the world. Bottom line? You either shape or are shaped by the world. Which one works best for you? As you engage life and all that it offers with the sense of play and adventure that comes from your natural curiosity to discover, you find yourself noticing that much of what you find is, although interesting, often a variation of what you already know. The Hawaiians have a saying "Same but different". This is more like "Different but somehow the same". Before you decide, if you want to know more about NLP and its potential in a new, ground-breaking context for its expression (the ever elusive paradigm shift?), consider being part of Quantum Leaps Beyond Techniques, an afternoon event in Toronto on November 16th. Not just an opportunity to listen, you're invited to engage directly and ask the questions that are on your mind; to explore the areas that matter to you. For more, please visit http://www.wel-systems.com/programs/qlbt.htm Many have approached NLP with an open mind, an open heart and an open hand. Although they continue to see the value in NLP and its myriad applications, they have also come to wonder why the promise of NLP has fallen short of their expectations. Even though miracles and magic abound, how can we recover our sense of competence and confidence in engaging life - full throttle! - and bring NLP to bear to bring the magic back into our own lives? Did you know? Our genes aren't quite as powerful as we once thought! For many years now Dr. Bruce Lipton, a cellular biologist formerly with Stanford University and University of Wisconsin has been a lone dissenting voice in the sea of traditional scientific belief that granted supremacy to DNA as the driver of disease or wellness. Bruce is fond of pointing out that "the theory" which originally proposed the power of DNA way back in 1953 has been around so long that it has slipped into scientific assumption as "the fact" of DNA supremacy. Bruce's work as a cellular biologist convinced him more than 15 years ago that DNA was not the driver. In fact, Bruce along with a small group of scientists are convinced that the 'survival of the fittest' approach to evolution that has come down to us from Darwin is not actually how evolution occurs! And now even mainstream scientists are questioning the supremacy of DNA. In a recent Ottawa Citizen newspaper article, Craig Venter, President of Celera Genomics stated that "DNA may not even be the major cause of genetic diseases such as breast cancer or colon cancer. It's unlikely to determine most of your personality, either." Celera Genomics was one of the two major organizations who each decoded the full set of human genes in 2000. The drive behind the project was to map the human genetic structure so that the genes behind many fatal and debilitating diseases could be isolated, identified and medical interventions created to correct them. Mr. Venter stated that while there may be a "colon cancer gene", research is showing that a person's environment has more to do with its development than the gene itself. The gene may make some people's bodies a little less able to repair the damage to colon cells caused by toxins produced in the digestive process but will not cause the disease in itself. Focusing on DNA and genes is seductive because with that approach we can measure it and we tend to overestimate its significance. Even identical twins develop differently. The greatest aspects of who we are and how healthy we are usually decided after our genes are already laid out. "It's a big mistake to attribute too much to our genes." concludes Mr. Venter. Now, I wonder how long it will take before they catch up to Bruce Lipton's other great discovery the fact that our thoughts can actually alter our DNA! Thought WavesA Quantum Biological Perspective on Addiction: Dis-Ease in the 21st CenturyQuantum biology , the New Science of the 21st century , tells us that our bodies are massive, incredible, bio-processors; stunningly brilliant, organically engineered computers that process data at the rate of 3 billion bits of information per second . Yet we live in a world that has allowed these simple facts - and they are facts! - to go unnoticed as we continue our quest for recovery from what we call 'addiction'. Although we have quickly sought to apply this 'new science' to our technology and created a plethora of new toys, we have failed to claim the equally incredible results that await us were we to engage these notions in the world of human behaviour. Although we know for a fact that our bodies - that we as human beings - are not at all the small, helpless beings we once thought ourselves to be, we continue to approach many of our problems the same old way. To use a metaphor, this is akin to using leeches to cure disease. It may give us a sense that we're doing something but are we really making a difference? The medical model of addiction has saved lives and yet for many, it has also proven not only to be ineffective but also to have become meaningless. Far too many in 12-Step and 'traditional' talk therapies continue to falter in their quest for sanity and serenity. For us to continue to evolve, the essence of who we are that perpetually seeks more must be engaged. Consider the possibility that Quantum biology places a whole new meaning to what addiction is and an equally ground-breaking approach to what to do about it. Allow your thinking to be challenged! Consider that what we call a 'disease' might actually be a signal of 'dis-ease' and a reflection of a much larger system to be considered. What if the practising addicts of the culture are really the canaries in the mines, warning us of imminent danger? What is their 'addiction' a warning about? What are the messages that the process of 'addiction' might be carrying? And how able are we to decode them? Louise LeBrun | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
