Paying Attention

Posted by on

This is one ball we should really keep our eyes on!  Choose wisely where you spend your time… your real-estate dollars…. your holidays…

The oceans are rising. It’s scary. It’s important. But it’s not complicated.

A few weeks ago, five experts testified before Congress on sea level rise and its impacts on the United States.  To capture a few points:

  1. Sea levels are rising today. It’s not a problem for the future. It’s happening now.
  2. Here’s why global warming leads to sea level rise: First, glaciers melt and add extra water to the oceans.
  3. Second, water expands when it gets warmer, so that means the oceans get bigger.
  4. On average, sea levels have increased 8 inches in the past 130 years.

Sea level rise isn’t a problem for tomorrow. It is here today. But that doesn’t mean it needs to be complicated. Even the most basic understanding of sea level rise will help you and your community prepare for its impacts.  Watch this PBS Video  (via The Climate Reality Project)

Parenting and Mental Health

Posted by on May 9, 2012 at 10:58 am

Much conversation is occurring in Canada as we strive to put in place a national Mental Health Plan.  As much as attention is being given to dealing with the problems as they present, we believe that prevention is a far more effective and compelling exploration… and one that has its roots in parenting. In the world of our children, all of us – parents, teachers, coaches, aunts, uncles, etc. – have the power to shape lives.  ’Parenting’ is a process that shapes lives and one that has shaped us all.

Louise’s article Parenting: The Other Gift That Keeps on Giving is appearing in today’s edition of  OmPlace/AltWire – Conscious Living and Best Bets From the  Alternative Web.  Excerpted from her book When the Horse Dies, Get Off… and Stop Dragging It Around!, this topic is often a difficult one for parents to engage.  Doing so requires that we reconsider our own experience of having been parented, often surfacing experiences and memories that are painful to recall.  And yet, without our willingness to do so, we find ourselves mindlessly repeating the habits of the past as a hope for the future – and we all know, that does not work.

Take a moment and revisit; then ask yourself: “Would I want to be parented by me?”

Lynn Andrews on Shamanism

Posted by on May 7, 2012 at 10:20 am

Lynn Andrews‘ work changed my life.  Long ago, at a time when I had become lost to mySelf, her bold and unique expressions of potential being, for women, called me home.  I read every word; and read many of her works several times.  Dog-eared and imprinted by the moments of my life, her books awakened, cajoled, compelled and propelled me forward into seeing myself… and my world… as I sought to create it.  I have never looked back!   Lynn’s offering of The Power Deck has been a constant in my work with women since they were created; and I keenly await the arrival of her new book Coming Full Circle: Ancient Teachings for a Modern World…  and encourage you to do so, as well.

I am honoured to say that when the 3rd edition of Fully Alive: Awakening Health, Humor, Compassion and  Truth was released, Lynn graciously accepted my invitation to write the Foreword for the book.  Having long been a fan, it was indeed, a thrill for me to be in such good company as we sought to create a ‘virtual place’ – through language and shared thought – that would allow others to engage themselves, and their world, differently.  I share with you the words of Lynn’s Foreword to Fully Alive  that you might discover the Shaman in you; that you might become willing to trust… and test… the expression of your own inner genius.  I know that through her presence, I discovered the power of my own.

If you have not done so, check out Lynn’s  new book Coming Full Circle

Enjoy!

Thinking About… Repetition
