TEDtalks ~ Barry Schwartz: Using our practical wisdom

Posted by on December 31, 2010 at 1:45 pm

In an intimate talk, Barry Schwartz dives into the question “How do we do the right thing?” With help from collaborator Kenneth Sharpe, he shares stories that illustrate the difference between following the rules and truly choosing wisely.

As you watch and listen to this video, ask yourself:

  • Do I know how to trust the truth of my own experience?
  • Am I both willing and able to engage that truth, out loud?
  • Do I have what it takes to live a meaningfully sustainable life, rather than one that is shaped (rewarded and punished) by external truths?

In a WEL-Systems® world, another question would be:

  • Do I know and can I trust the Signal from Self, that I know mySelf to be?

Without this ability to both know and engage this internal cue, we remain captive to an externally referenced world – and that, we already know, is not working.

Barry Schwartz studies the link between economics and psychology, offering startling insights into modern life. Lately, working with Ken Sharpe, he’s studying wisdom. Full bio and more links

Clearing Space for New Beginnings

Episode 43 – Reclaiming Your Self ~ 10/12/30 ~ Clearing Space for New Beginnings

As the end of one year fast approaches, the beginning of the new one beckons. In truth, it is more about the rhythms and cycles of our questions, flowing through the long curved lines of our unfolding… than it ever is about the straight lines and sharp angles of our answers.

The Ancient Hawaiians knew well what was required to clear space that we might learn, let go and live more fully… allowing what was to inform and expand our potential; and allowing what might be to take shape in a world of our own design.

Join Louise in this opportunity to explore and discover a compelling approach to clearing space for the new year to come. Drawing on the power of your internal world; and accessing your natural capacity for theatre of the mind, the mindful process of Ho’oponopono will take you on a guided journey of your own evolution.

This Guided Reflection is taken from the multi-CD series of Guided Reflections designed and expressed by Louise LeBrun for : Energy and the Chakras; Awakening the Body; Life is a Choice; and Connecting to Self.

Global Dimming

Posted by on December 24, 2010 at 4:43 pm

This one is new to me! As I watched this and wondered about 2011, I was mindful of the complexity of all living, organic systems; and the degree to which we need to stop… take a breath… and ask ourselves: Who do we choose to become? – and act accordingly! Evolution by Intention is possible for us, if we choose to claim it for ourselves.

Episode 42 – Reclaiming Your Self ~ 10/12/23 ~ Out of the Shadows

Some time ago, when this radio show was first launched, we explored the topic of ‘Coming Out of the Shadows’ with guest Sheila Winter Wallace (Episode 2). Now, more than 9 months later, we revisit this topic with the intention of noticing and capturing the movement in our own lives, with the passage of time.

How has your life changed in the last 9 months? If this were to represent a time of gestation for the birth of a new way of being, who have you become? How do you now move through your world: what’s different, what has stayed the same… and what’s next?

Join Louise as she revisits not only the experience of what it takes to come out of the shadows but explores the implications of having done so. Guest Sheila Winter Wallace returns to look back at her own journey as we open the telephone lines to explore yours!

In conversation with: Sheila Winter Wallace – WSI Affiliate and Certified CODE Model Coach and much, much more! You can also hear Sheila on the CD, Thoughts On… Standing Your Ground. To find out more about Sheila, visit Sheila’s web site

TEDtalks ~ Hanna Rosin: New data on the rise of women

Posted by on December 19, 2010 at 10:16 am

Hanna Rosin reviews startling new data that shows women actually surpassing men in several important measures, such as college graduation rates. Do these trends, both US-centric and global, signal the “end of men”? Probably not — but they point toward an important societal shift worth deep discussion.

Hanna Rosin is the sort of journalist who dares to articulate what people are thinking – only they hadn’t realized it yet. Born in Israel and raised in Queens, the co-founder of women’s site DoubleX (an offshoot of Slate) and contributing editor at the Atlantic Monthly is probably best known for the furor raised by her article titled (not by her) “The End of Men”—which asserts that the era of male dominance has come to an end as women gain power in the postindustrial economy. A similar furor greeted her well-researched piece “The Case Against Breastfeeding,” which questioned the degree to which scientific evidence supports breast-feeding’s touted benefits.

Families: Hope, habit and beyond!

Episode 41 – Reclaiming Your Self ~ 10/12/16 ~ Families: Hope, habit and beyond!

The one thing we can all admit to is that none of us is hatched!  Whatever its shape or form; whether by accident or by design, family – and all that goes with it! – has an impact on us all.

For all the families that enjoy being together, there are the ones that struggle… with each other and against what have come to feel like the chains that bind.

Today, our notion of ‘family’ has become fluid; and given that our families are a reflection of who we are, there is hope for us all as we choose to come face-to-face with ourselves and each other.  It’s never too late as we redesign how we define ‘family’ in meaningful ways… and let go of what keeps us small.

Join Louise and her guests as they explore the myth of the intact family and all that goes with it… particularly at those times of year when history and habit can so easily overtake reason, intention and desire.

In conversation with: Audrey Buchanan, Melissa Owoc and Stephanie Nelson – Women in the WEL-Systems® community who are discovering that there is more to family than what they were taught to believe was possible!

Note: Audrey Buchanan and Melissa Owoc are shown in the picture to the right;

a picture of Stephanie Nelson is not available at this time.

TEDtalks ~ Tony Porter: A call to men

Posted by on December 12, 2010 at 10:36 am

Tony Porter is an educator and activist who is internationally recognized for his effort to end violence against women.

At TEDWomen, Tony Porter makes a call to men everywhere: Don’t “act like a man.” Telling powerful stories from his own life, he shows how this mentality, drummed into so many men and boys, can lead men to disrespect, mistreat and abuse women and each other. His solution: Break free of the “man box.”

Tony Porter is the visionary and co-founder behind the nonprofit A Call to Men: The National Association of Men and Women Committed to Ending Violence Against Women. Porter’s message of engagement and self-examination has connected powerfully with numerous domestic and sexual violence programs for such high-profile groups as the National Football League and the National Basketball Association, and colleges and universities around the country, including the US Military Academy at West Point and the US Naval Academy at Annapolis. Porter is also an international lecturer for the U.S. State Department, having done extensive work in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

He is a faculty member of the New York State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services Academy of Addiction Studies, where he co-authored their curriculum for clinicians who work with chemically dependent African-Americans. He also specializes in developing social justice models for human service organizations.
